Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team pushed its non-conference record to 7-3 as they defeated the King Tornados at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center Sunday, 79-71.

Robert Huntington (Jr., Perth, Australia) set his career-high in points for the second time this season as he scored 23 points. He shot 8-for-12 from the floor and knocked down five free throws. He also had three rebounds and one steal in the contest. Lemar Dyer (Sr., Miami, Fla.) filled up the box score by collecting team-highs with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Sharks (7-4) did what they do best at the start of the game by knocking down five three-pointers en route to a 22-8 start. Coming off a record-setting performance, John Brooks (Sr., Perris, Calif.) carried his momentum into this game by scoring nine points in the first five minutes of the half. He finished the game with 11 points and four rebounds.

The Sharks’ hot shooting cooled down as the half played out and the Tornados (6-9) cut the deficit to as low as seven points on multiple occasions. The Sharks maintained their lead throughout the half and entered the break up 48-33.

The Sharks shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the opening half, the seventh time they have shot over 50 percent in the first period in 11 games. NSU also moved the ball effectively as they assisted on 13 of 17 field goals, including the first nine. Huntington had a strong first half, scoring 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 shooting at the free throw line.

As the Tornados started to hit their three-pointers with ease, Huntington paced the Sharks by scoring seven of his team’s first eight points of the second half. The Sharks did not bury the Tornados in the second half as their lead ranged from 8-to-15 points over the first 13 minutes of the frame.

King made the home team pay by going on a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to five. The Sharks weathered the storm by holding King to only three points over the final three minutes to win their seventh out-of-conference game. Alex Gynes (Sr., Nowra, Australia) scored 10 points in the second period, half of which came at the foul line. He finished the game with 19 points on 50 percent shooting.

Lukas Roesch (So., Sugar Grove, Ohio) came off the bench for the first time in three games and posted 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Ross Allsop (Sr., Sydney, Australia) also put forth a solid effort by earning five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He is now one rejection away from becoming the first Shark to reach 100 career blocks.

With non-conference play finished, the Sharks will return to Sunshine State Conference action this Wednesday at home as they take on Florida Tech at 7:30 p.m.
