Softball Adds 10 for 2012 Season

Six freshmen and four transfers compose 2012 newcomers.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball head coach, Lesa Boneé, has announced the addition of 10 players to the 2012 squad. Six freshmen and four transfer students comprise the incoming class for the Sharks, which brings the roster total to 19 student-athletes.

The Sharks’ coaching staff welcomes two freshmen that have the ability to pitch, as well as play the field for NSU in Barbara Pflug and Michelle Sarradet. Pflug comes to NSU from Chain of Lakes Collegiate in Winter Haven, Fla. where she won three MVP awards. In 2008, she recorded 150 strikeouts to win her first MVP award and then batted .589 as a sophomore to win the team offensive award. “Barbara is going to be a nice addition to the staff,” said coach Boneé. “She has a lot of tools to work, but has room for improvement going forward.”

Sarradet, sister of former NSU Shark Lexi, makes her way to NSU from Miami Sunset Senior HS where she was a four-year softball and three-year basketball player. Sarradet will play outfield for the Sharks with the ability to pitch. “She will be a good addition to the outfield and program. She has a good stick and will help in the running game, but may also see some time on the mound,” says coach Boneé of Sarradet. “She will bring some humor to the team and it’s great to keep the Sarradet’s in the Shark family.”

Krista Colburn joins the Sharks as a catcher from Skyline HS in Mead, Colo. As a three-sport athlete (softball, basketball and track), Colburn finished her senior season with a .470 batting average for the Falcons. “Colburn is going to help us behind the plate. She has good size and a strong bat,” comments coach Boneé. “As a freshman, she has strong leadership capabilities and comes from a good travel-ball program.”

The coaching staff is also welcoming two transfers that can catch and play first base for the Sharks. Kelly Olencki joins the Sharks after spending last year at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. At Jonathan Law HS, Olencki collected all-state honor from 2008-2010 while batting .396 during her career. “She is a transfer who has good size and we will continue to work hard at developing her skills behind the plate and offensively,” says coach Boneé of Olencki.

Chelsea Emery, a Eustis, Fla. native, played the last two seasons at Brevard Community College where she earned second-team all-conference honors. “Chelsea is going to help us in a lot of different ways. She will see time at first base and possibly behind the plate,” commented coach Boneé. “She is a good student and a leader by example.”

Ashley Silveira, another junior transfer from Miami Dade College, has the ability to play catcher and outfield for the Sharks. The Miami native attended Monsignor Edward Pace HS where she was a three-year member of the softball team. "She is truly a utility player that will provide consistency wherever she plays in the field. She joins NSU from a national championship JUCO program,” said coach Boneé regarding Silveira.

A junior transfer and three freshmen highlight the newcomers that will be contributors in the infield for the Sharks. Jamiee Vega joins NSU after playing the first two years of her collegiate career at Santa Fe College. As a freshman with the Saints, Vega garnered first-team All-Mid-Florida Conference honors, batting .380 and followed it up with a second-team selection after batting .330 as a sophomore.

“Vega is a transfer from a solid JUCO program. She will see time in the middle infield, bringing versatility both offensively and defensively, as well as speed that will help in the running,” said coach Boneé. “She has good leadership capabilities and comes from a good high school program at Gulliver Prep.”

Zina Constancia, Raven Sepulveda and Lorena Spaulding each enter their first year of collegiate play with the Sharks. Constancia, a native of Curacao, played for the Eagles Softex club team before joining the NSU softball team. “She is our first international freshman player who has a lot of tools to work with and a tremendous work ethic. She has a strong arm and we will continue to work hard at improving her skills and knowledge of the game,” says coach Boneé of Constancia.

Sepulveda will join NSU after being a four-year starter at Tampa Catholic HS. She served as a team captain her senior year and also garnered honorable mention recognition in 2009 and 2010 from the Tampa Tribune. “Raven, who will see time at second base, will definitely help us out,” comments coach Boneé. “She has done a great job and has exceeded early expectations, while also giving 100 percent everyday on the field.

Lorena Spaulding is a local recruit from Pembroke Pines, Fla., playing softball and basketball for four seasons at the Hollywood Christian Academy. She had a .678 batting average, as well as 24 runs scored and 20 bases her senior season, leading to an all-state selection. “Lorena is an incoming freshman with good speed that will help enhance our running game. She has a lot of tools that just need to be polished,” said coach Boneé.

The ten newcomers join nine returners for the 2012 season that the coaching staff has high expectations for. “As a coaching staff we’re excited to have more options this season. This is the largest roster of my tenure,” comments coach Boneé. “We were looking to bring more depth to the team and although we are young, it’s exciting to have those options to work with.”
