Swimming Completes Day One of the All-Florida Invitational

First day highlighted by top-10 performances and besting rivals.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took their first dip into the pool of the season, completing day one of the All-Florida Invitational, hosted by Florida.

In a field mixed with primarily Division I teams, the women’s team is currently in ninth out of nine teams with 17 points, only 12 behind Florida Southern. The men’s team is in fifth out of six teams with 136 points, well ahead of Miami’s 20 points.

Currently Florida, who finished seventh at the NCAA National Championships in 2010-11, leads both the men's and women's standings with a men's score of 320 and 317 for its women's team.

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay the Sharks placed two teams ahead of both Florida Atlantic and North Florida for 15th and 16th-place, respectively. The team of; Linea Cutter (Fr., Coral, Springs, Fla.), Erin Black (Jr., Fort, Myers, Fla.), Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba), and Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) finished with a time of 1:40.69, and the team of Alexandra Zatylny (So., Quebec, Canada), Arianna Sunyak (Fr., Cleveland, Ohio), Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland), and Lauren Chapple (So., London, England) finished at 1:42.03.

The top men’s relay team in the 200-yard freestyle relay, made up of Armin Hornikel, Esau Simpson (So., St. David's Grenada)William Bunge (Sr., Springfield, Mo.), and Ash Dougan (Sr., Tewkesbury, Glouchestershire), finished seventh (1:25.46) and just a second shy of an NCAA B qualifying time. The Sharks placed a second relay team in the top-10 for the event, featuring Florian Mehlan, Addison Cates (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.), Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.), Jim Shelley (So., Charlottesville, Va.), finishing ninth at 1:29.15.

In the 400-yard medley relay the men’s team placed an assemblage of Sharks ahead of rival Florida Southern to place eighth at 3.33.22. The team featured Jim Shelley (So., Huron S.D.), Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain), Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.), and Dougan.

On the women’s side, the Sharks placed a relay team in 14th, a notch ahead of North Florida, and four better than conference foe Florida Southern. The relay team clocked a time of 4:03.65, and consisted of Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.), Jambroska, Chapple, and Cutter.

The Sharks continue the All-Florida Invitational Saturday and will conclude competition Sunday, Oct. 9.
