Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Complete Competition at All-Florida Invitational

Sharks display their potential, besting tough Division I opponents.

RESULTS

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded their first event of the 2011-12 season, competing in the All-Florida Invitational against Division I and Division II opponents. 

The men’s team finished fifth overall with 438 points and the women’s team finished ninth with 83 points. Host Florida won both the men’s and women’s tournaments with 1,092 points and 1,074 points, respectively.

On the final day of the three, the men’s team started its day with the 1650-yard freestyle. Three Sharks finished within the top-10 placing ahead of swimmers from Florida State, Florida Atlantic, and Florida. Addison Cates (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) paced the trio of Sharks, finishing seventh with a time of 16:23.06, while Jonas Grundstrom  (Jr.,Fagersta, Sweden) (16:28.07) and Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) (16:28.15) finished shortly after Cates, placing in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.) (2:11.42) and Erin Black (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) (2:14.58) finished within four seconds of one another to secure 14th and 15th-place in the 200-yard backstroke.

The men’s team also placed two back-to-back Sharks in the 200-yard backstroke with Josh Davis (So., Huron, S.D.) (1:56.20) and Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain) (1:58.56) finishing in 11th and 12th-place, respectively. Michael Zislin (Fr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) also swam the event for the Sharks, he touched at 2:02.13 for 15th-place.

In the 100-yard free, Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) touched at 47.71, less than a second of a NCAA B-qualifying time (46.96). Esau Simpson (So., St. David's Grenada) and Ash Dougan (Sr., Tewkesbury Glouchestershire, England) finished shortly after Hornikel and less than a second of one another at 48.38 and 48.77 for 14th and 15th, respectively.

Ewa Jamborska (Jr., Katowice, Poland) was the top Shark in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in 2:27.55 for 12th-place ahead of swimmers from Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida, and Miami. Ashley Bransford (Fr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) also swam the 200-yard breaststroke finishing 16th with a time of 2:31.67.

On the men’s side Oscar Aldabe was the top Shark in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in 2:11.75 for 10th-place. Hornikel finished less than a second behind Aldabe with a time of 2:15.04 for 11th-place. Cameron Pfahler also finished in the top-15 for the Sharks, placing 13th, with a time of 2:16.02.

The Sharks swim again Oct. 15, in a Sunshine State Conference meet at Saint Leo.
