FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A total of 75 Nova Southeastern student-athletes were named to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the spring 2011 semester, as announced by Commissioner Jay Jones.
“Academic success is certainly one of our pillars of success here at NSU,” said athletic director Michael Mominey. “We continue to stress the balance of athletic success and academic success in all that we do. The coaches, support staff and most importantly the student-athletes continue to do a great job in the classroom as well as on the field. This is a great accomplishment.”
Of the 75 Sharks represented on the honor roll, 11 student-athletes finished the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. NSU has 16 more student-athletes on the honor roll than last year, a testament to a new swimming and diving program that has followed suit with the academic success of the entire athletic department. If the SSC sponsored track and field, the program would have added 16 more athletes to the honor roll.
The conference honored a total of 672 student-athletes with 102 carrying a 4.0 GPA
To be eligible for the Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll, a student-athlete must post a minimum GPA of 3.20 on a scale of 4.0. Participants in the sports of men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, women's rowing, baseball, softball, and men's and women's lacrosse were eligible for the honor roll.
Having won 76 national championships since the league was founded in 1975, the SSC's student-athletes have also proven to be successful in the classrooms. For the fourth consecutive year, the Sunshine State Conference led all 22 Division II conferences with an Academic Success Rate of 86 percent.
