Former NSU Forward Gynes Signs with Sydney Kings

Gynes will play in the NBL, the premier basketball league in his native Australia

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern men’s basketball alum Alex Gynes will begin his professional basketball career as he has signed with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League.

“I’m very pleased for Alex that one of Australia’s most storied franchises has decided to include him in their rich history and tradition,” said NSU head coach Gary Tuell. “The Sydney Kings of Australia’s National Basketball League are the NBA equivalent of the Los Lakers. They are a team with a wonderful history of winning championships and developing some of Australia’s greatest professional players. I’ve been fortunate to have three of my former players – Kavossy Franklin, Gary Boodnikoff and Russell Hinder – all play for the Kings and win one or more championships there”

Gynes led the Sharks in his final season by posting team-highs with 18 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game en route to All-SSC Second-Team honors. Gynes shot 49 percent (151-311) from the floor and reached the foul line at a high rate while shooting 75 percent (146-196) there. He also ranked second on the team with both 50 assists and 28 steals.

The former Shark forward scored a career-high 30 points in games against Valdosta State and Barry, both of which were on the road. Gynes was one of two players in the conference to average at least 18 points and eight rebounds a game.

Gynes finishes his career with 266 made free throws, the most of any Shark in the NCAA era and third all-time. He also ranks seventh in field goals made (293) and ninth in rebounds (418).

“Alex will be very successful with the Kings.,” said Tuell. “He will bring his personal and very special brand of intensity and leadership to the club. He has an opportunity to contribute and play right away and that’s a rare thing for a rookie. Kings’ fans can always count on Alex to provide a spark and put a charge into his teammates when they need a lift. He’s a warrior and he’ll give 100 percent of himself to the team and to the Sydney fans. I couldn’t be happier for Alex and we wish him and the Kings great success.”
