FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
Courtney Berger, a sophomore coxswain for Nova Southeastern’s rowing squad, was featured in the Sept. 12 issue of Sports Illustrated as one of seven athletes in its “Faces in the Crowd” section.

During the SIRA regatta last spring, Berger noticed that a rival Rollins College competitor was hunched over and appeared to be having trouble breathing. Berger then directed her freshmen eight boat over to the Rollins boat where she proceeded to hold the individual upright until she regained breathing and medical personnel could reach the boat.

Berger, and the entire freshmen eight boat were previously recognized by the NCAA on two occasions. First, Berger and the entire boat received the 2011 Female Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award and then Berger was one of five individuals recognized by the NCAA committee with a sportsmanship award for the 2010-11 academic year.
