FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University athletic director Michael Mominey has announced today that associate head coach
Amanda Brown and assistant coach
Garrett Runion will take over as interim head coaches for the women’s and men’s golf teams effectively immediately.
“We are looking forward to both Amanda and Garrett continuing with successful traditions that have been established with both the men’s and women’s programs,” athletic director
Michael Mominey said. “They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their respective interim positions and we look forward to another successful year of NSU golf during this interim period.”
As a former NSU student-athlete (2001-05) and All-American (2002), Brown returned to NSU in 2007 and served as the assistant coach for four seasons before being named associate head coach in October, 2010. She has had one of the most decorated resumes of anyone in NSU athletic history helping guide the women’s team to three consecutive NCAA National Division II National titles, four South Region Championships, three Sunshine State Conference Championships and 33 event titles. She also helped coach two golfers (
Maria Garcia Austt and
Sandra Changkija), who combined for five NCAA Division II National Player of the Year awards between 2007 and 2011.
Last season, Brown helped lead one of the most dominant teams in all of college sports as they took nine out of 11 event titles in the fall and spring seasons. The team went on to claim their third straight NCAA National Championship and also set the NCAA Division II record for best score in relation to par with a five over 1,157.
Brown has led the Sharks to a strong start in 2011-12 as the women’s team has claimed two top-three finishes to start the season. She has also coached the team to one individual event title as
Abbey Gittings (Jr., Tamworth, England) took home the trophy at the Lady Falcon Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. at LPGA International.
After serving as a team captain for three years while playing at Louisiana State, Runion joined the men’s golf staff and led the Sharks to a successful year as an assistant coach in 2010-11. Last season the men’s golf team finished the season with seven top-five finishes throughout the fall and spring seasons.
In his first season as assistant coach, Runion helped guide the Sharks’ men’s team to their third SSC title in six years. The Sharks placed four players in the top-13 at the conference tournament, including
Ricardo Celia (So., Barranquilla, Columbia) who nearly won a playoff to take home individual title. Runion also coached
Ben Vertz (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) to PING All-American honors.
Runion has already had success in the fall of 2011. Runion coached a men’s golf team with six underclassmen to a top-five finish at the Adams Cup in Portsmouth, R.I.
Both Brown and Runion’s first event as interim head coaches will be the NSU Sharks Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. at PGA National from Oct. 10-11.
