Softball Participates in Tie-Dye Event with Deerfield Beach Sharks Team

The NSU softball team helps athletes to become prepared for future in collegiate athletics

DEERFIELD BEACH,Fla.-The Shark-to-Shark tradition continues as the 12-and-under Deerfield Beach Sharks, also known as the “Little Sharks,” and the Nova Southeastern University Softball team met up for their annual “Tie-Dye Clinic Combo.”

Every year, the Little Sharks, 2012 USSSA National Champions, join the NSU team on their campus for a fun team activity followed by a skills clinic. Following a fun and messy tie-dye session where both teams tie-dyed future practice jerseys, both sets of Sharks transferred their focus to the diamond at A.D. Griffin Sports Complex. The NSU Sharks interacted with their understudies for a two-hour clinic, sharing their knowledge of the game, providing specific skill instruction and sharing with them what it takes to compete at the next level.

“They absolutely love it,” said Karla Antonio, manager for the Little Sharks. “It’s a rare opportunity for them whether they understand it yet or not. It gives them something different to look forward to and it keeps them excited about practice. It’s always good to break up the regular routine and keep them engaged.”

“I think it’s great that we continue to foster this relationship,” said NSU head coach, Lesa Bonee’. “It gives the young ones a glimpse into their ‘could-be’ futures as collegiate athletes. They have built-in role models and a unique perspective that most players their age don’t get an opportunity to experience.”

“On the flipside, it’s great for my team as well,” she said. “As they’re teaching, they’re learning. It forces them to think and see things from a different perspective and ultimately helps them with their own game. Plus, it’s great for them to give back. They used to be that little 12-year-old.”

In addition to last week’s session, the Sharks will meet again later in the month for their third-annual Pumpkin Decorating Competition where a Little Shark is paired with an NSU Shark and they work together to decorate a pumpkin.
