ORLANDO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s cross country team won the program’s first Sunshine State Conference Championship Saturday, Oct. 20 at the UCF Cross Country Complex.
The men’s achievement marks the 20th overall SSC Championship in Nova Southeastern history. The mark is another benchmark in NSU’s recent surge in success, with 11 of the institution’s SSC titles coming after May of 2010.
“The men ran very well today, we were dominant at the first mile mark and knew we had it from there,” said head coach Bryan Hagopian. “When the pack when out it was a really tight race, but after the first mile our team pulled away. Our guys ran together the entire race and executed the game plan.”
Kevin Meagher (Sr., Providence, R.I.) led the way for the Sharks with a second-place finish of 26:06.30. His time was 10 seconds off the winner of the meet, Chris Cacciapaglia of Florida Tech, and three seconds off his career-best time from last season.
Following Meagher in the top-five was
Timo Kilp (Jr., Tallin, Estonia). Kilp finished in fifth overall, defeating the top runners from half the teams in the field. Kilp finished with a time of 256:20 flat. Kilp’s time was the best of his career and one of the 15 best 8K finishes in school history.
Jordan Brown (Fr., Gainesville, Fla.) had a solid outing in his first SSC Championship, finishing in eighth place with a time of 26:25.90.
Long Tran (Jr., Saigon, Vietnam) and
Omar Hernandez (Sr., Rio Pic, Ariz.) finished back-to-back in the top-15. Tran clocked in at 26:46 and Hernandez recorded a time of 26:56.50.
Nico Crecco (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and
Nicholas Hogan (So., Peoria, Ariz.) rounded out the point scorers for the Sharks. Crecco clocked in at 27:54.30, with Hogan following behind at 28:08 flat.
The Sharks will now move on to NCAA South Regionals on Nov. 3 in Hunstville, Ala.
