Student-Athletes Help the Community This Thanksgiving Season

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern student-athletes took part of the HANDY’S “Adopt-a-Family” event, where locals from the community sponsored a family and provided a Thanksgiving basket filled with all of the necessities for a Thanksgiving dinner. This amazing event provides hundreds of disadvantaged families with the chance to have a wonderful holiday dinner.

HANDY was established in Broward county in 1985 and is an organization whose mission is to embrace, educate, and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged, productive adults. HANDY, which stands for Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth, annually serves more than 1,300 at-risk children who participate in comprehensive programs that focus on education, youth development, and economic self-sufficiency.

During this Thanksgiving season, NSU’s student-athletes worked together to bring in everything from whole turkeys to pumpkin pie mix. Overall, NSU student-athletes were able to provide Thanksgiving dinners to over 10 different families.

“Sharing a Thanksgiving dinner with your family is something that makes you realize how fortunate you are to have each other, said NSU cheerleader Paiton Meurer. “It’s great that we can help other families do the same and enjoy a wonderful dinner together.”
