NSU WEEKEND RECAP: Sharks Kick Off the Spring Season

With 17 athletic teams on campus, the Nova Southeastern Sharks are always competing at the highest level. If you did not get a chance to follow your favorite teams this weekend, here is what you missed:

BASEBALL
The NSU baseball team took care of business in their opening weekend series against Albany State at home, sweeping the Rams and outscoring them over three games, 36-2. The Sharks won Friday’s game, 12-0, and went back-to-back with wins on Saturday, 13-1 and 11-1.

Scott Woodrey (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) had a monster weekend by going 5-for-9 with eight RBI and a home run. It was his team’s second home run of the season as Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) knocked one out of the park in the first game on Saturday. Anthony Angulo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) batted .600 on the weekend with four runs scored. The pitching was also on point this weekend, as 11 pitchers combined to allow only two earned runs in three games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The NSU women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid on the road Saturday, topping No. 18 Florida Southern 62-58Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) paced the Sharks early, hitting on all three of her attempts from beyond the arc to lead her to 13 first half points and a Sharks' 37-30 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Sharks built double-digit leads twice just to see the Mocs fight back. Florida Southern was closing in with less than a minute remaining, but Quinessa Johnson (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) sealed the win for the Sharks with a layup with 16 ticks left on the clock. Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) recorded a double-double, grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds while chipping in 11 points.

TENNIS
The No. 24 NSU tennis team defeated State College of Florida, 5-4, on Sunday, Feb. 5 at the NSU Tennis Center.

In singles action, junior Federica Longo (Buenos Aires, Argentina), defeated her No. 4 opponent Lacey Lapp (6-2, 6-2). Celebrating her Sharks singles debut with a two set victory, Andrea Wise (Fr., Ashland, Ore.), defeated Mia Popaja (6-2, 6-1), playing in the No. 5 spot.

NSU split doubles play with the Manatees and took the third win with a forfeit from the other team. Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) and Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) recorded an 8-4 victory playing in the No. 2 spot. The international duo of senior Dominique Wimmer (Gunstramdorf, Austria) and No. 44 Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia), were defeated in the No. 1 spot. The Sharks collected another point in doubles, as the Manatees didn’t bring a team for the No. 3 spot.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The NSU men’s basketball team traveled to Lakeland, Fla. to face Florida Southern and lost, 94-85, Saturday. The Sharks split the season series with the Mocs as the Sharks defeated Florida Southern back in January.

Iran Hollis (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) had a career night by posting personal-bests with 26 points and 13 rebounds. He shot 9-for-12 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the foul line. Hollis also dished out four assists, one short of Shaun Pratl (Jr., Chicago Ridge, Ill.), who had a team-best five. Pratl shot 5-for-6 en route to 11 points.

SOFTBALL
The NSU softball team traveled to Pensacola, Fla. over the weekend to compete in the West Florida Crossover Tournament. The tournament pitted two Gulf South Conference teams against two Sunshine State Conference teams for an opportunity to face tough regional competition early in the season.

The Sharks took on the Argos on Saturday in a doubleheader to open the tournament. The Sharks fell behind 3-0 early in the first game but would not go away without a fight. The Sharks closed the gap to one, 3-2, with the help of a home run from Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.). NSU was unable to tie up the game though, as the Argos took the opener 3-2.

In the second game, Saladrigas drilled another bomb to tie the game at 2-2 in the first inning. The Argos would build a 10-5 lead heading into the Sharks final half inning where NSU would rally with four runs, but come up just short of tying the game once again, falling 10-9.

On Sunday, the Sharks battled No. 6 Valdosta State in another doubleheader. The Blazers pulled away in both of the games late against NSU. Saladrigas slammed another home run on Sunday to bring her total to three for the season. Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) made pitching appearances in three games, racking up 19 strikeouts.
