FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– Nova Southeastern men’s golfer, Ricardo Celia (So., Barranquilla, Columbia) recently competed at the European Challenge Tour’s Pacific Rubiales Columbia Classic in Barranquilla, Columbia March 8-12, at the Country Club de Barranquilla, where he finished 20th overall.

“I am very proud of Ricardo’s play in Barranquilla and how he represented Nova Southeastern on a big stage in his hometown in Colombia,” said head men’s golf coach Garrett Runion. “He has worked hard on his game this semester, with extra emphases on his fitness in the gym and his attitude on the course. I am glad to see him be rewarded with a 5th-place finish in our last college tournament and back it up with a top-20 in a European Challenge Tour event.  I know this will give him confidence for the rest of the semester and into post season play.”

Celia who shot +1 (72-75-74-68--289), traveled back to his hometown over spring break as one of three amateurs to compete in a field of roughly 130 professional golfers at the 6,827 yard, par-72 Country Club de Barranquilla, located north of Columbia in the Columbian Caribbean by the Atlantic Coast.

The European Challenge Tour plays host to an entire season of tournaments all over Europe and is comparable to the PGA Nationwide Tour. Celia, being a strong collegiate golfer and due to the fact the event took place in his hometown; he received an exemption into the tournament and took full advantage of his opportunity

Celia went up against some very experienced professionals and was the only amateur to make the cut into the final rounds. Despite receiving an erroneous four-stroke penalty violation at the end of round-two, he was still able to battle his way into the top-20, finishing tied for 20th. Had the four-stroke penalty not been assessed, Celia would have finished at three under and tied for eighth-place.
