Swimming and Diving Brings Home 22 All-America Honors

The Sharks also garnered 35 Honorable Mention All-America nods.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up their second season of competition last week at the NCAA Division-II National Championships, and the Sharks made their presence known. The men’s team captured 15 All-America honors and 22 Honorable Mention All-America accolades, while the women brought home seven All-America awards and 13 Honorable Mention All-America nods.
 
To be selected as All-America, a swimmer must finish the Championships with one of the eight fastest times, while swimmers who have times ranked ninth through 16th receive Honorable Mention All-America honors.
 
On the men’s side, Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) was the most decorated swimmer for NSU, locking in three All-America and four Honorable Mention All-America selections. In the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and as a member of the 400- free relay team, Hornikel was selected as an All-American. He garnered Honorable Mention All-America status in the 200-yard medley relay, 200- free relay, 400- medley relay and 100- breast.
 
For the women, Erin Black (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) garnered four All-America and two Honorable Mention All-America awards. Black, who was the national champion in the 500- free, also was bestowed All-America honors in the 800- free relay, 1,000- free and the 1,650- free. The junior added Honorable Mention All-Americas accolades in the 200- free and 400- free relay.
 
The swimmer that earned the most All-America selections came from men’s team member Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden). Norstrand swam to top-8 times in each of the following events: the 500- free, 1,000- free, 1,650- free, 400- free relay and the 800- free relay. Teammate Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) was also recognized five times, twice as an All-American and three times as an Honorable Mention All-American. Grundstrom earned the top honor in the 800- free relay and 1,650 free, while registering as a Honorable Mention All-American in the 500- free, 1,000- free and the 400-yard individual medley.
 
Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England) for the women and Josh Davis (So., Huron, S.D.) for the men each secured one All-America and three Honorable Mention All-America nods. Chapple was one of the top-8 swimmers nationally in the 800- free relay, while also a Honorable Mention All-American in the 200- IM, 200-yard butterfly and the 400- medley relay. Davis swam to an All-America selection in the 200-yard backstroke, while recording Honorable Mention All-America times in the 100- back and both 200- medley relay events.
 
A pair of men’s swimmers, Addison Cates (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) and Esau Simpson (So., St. David’s Grenada), each picked up one All-America and two Honorable Mention All-America honors. Cates was an All-American in the 800- free relay and Honorable Mention in the 1,000- and 1,650- free. Simpson swam to an All-America time in the 400- free relay and Honorable Mention times in the 200- medley and 200- free relays.
 
Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland) tallied three Honorable Mention All-America awards, racing in the: 100- breast, 200- breast and 400- medley relay. Teammates Jessica Rocheleau (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba) were both selected as All-Americans in the 800- free relay and Honorable Mention All-Americans in the 400- free relay.
 
On the men’s side, William Bunge (Sr., Springfield, Mo.) and Florian Mehlan  (So., Moers, Germany) each recorded one All-America and one Honorable Mention selection. Bunge reached the top-8 in the 400- free relay and honorable mention status in the 200- free relay, while Mehlan reached All-America status in the 800- free relay and honorable mention in the 500- free.
 
Santiago Pombo (Fr., Bogota, Columbia) and Ash Dougan (Sr., Tewkesbury, Glouchestershire, England) were each selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans in the 200- free and 400- medley relays. Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Oscar Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain) rounded out the men’s awards, each securing Honorable Mention All-America status in the 400- IM.
 
For the women, Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded Honorable Mention All-America awards in the 400- free and 400- medley relays. Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.) joined Laurenz as an Honorable Mention All-American in the 400- medley relay.
 
As a team, the Shark men finished in 10th place at the NCAA Championships, while the women placed 14th in just the second year of competition for each squad.
