FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern golfer
Benjamin Taylor (So., Leatherhead, England), currently ranked No.1 in the nation, will travel to Portugal, April 25-27, to represent team Europe for the 2012 Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy at the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club.
The Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy is an international match with the best players from Europe and Asia-Pacific and is a true demonstration of golf globalism.
“This is a tremendous honor for Ben,” said men’s golf coach Garrett Runion. “He was selected to a team of some of the best amateur golfers in the world and we couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishment. He is a true testament of what our program here at Nova Southeastern represents and we wish him the best of luck in Portugal.”
Portugal is a country known for its simplicity, natural beauty, wonderful gastronomy and of course for its golf courses. Monte Rei Golf & Country Club will play as the host course for the 2012 Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy, located in the hills just a few miles to the northeast of Tavira in Portugal's eastern Algarve.
Team Europe’s players have been selected with guidance from the R&A’s World Amateur Golf Rankings and the players’ national coaches and officials as well as by regarding high-level performances. Attention was paid to match play results, particularly those attained in the European Golf Association’s International Matches and European Team events.
Taylor will meet an exceptionally strong Asia/Pacific team this year and will be competing against amateur players who have competed in the Masters the previous two years.
The tournament format consists of two teams of twelve representing Europe and Asia-Pacific. There are three days of play. The first two days comprise five four-ball matches each morning and five foursomes’ matches each afternoon. On the final day, all twelve team players compete in single match play. A win counts as one point, a half yields half point and a lost match returns zero. In the event of a tie, the trophy shall be retained by the holders.
