Women’s Soccer Picked to Finish Sixth in SSC

The Sharks receive 82 points in the preseason poll.

WINTER PARK, Fla. The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, as announced by the Sunshine State Conference office, Wednesday.

The Sharks, who finished sixth in the conference a season ago, have a lot of youth with them this season. Thirteen freshmen join NSU but the Sharks do bring back key players from last year’s roster.

Malin Broberg (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) led the way for the Sharks last season, scoring seven goals and tallying four assists and was named to the NSCAA All-Region Team.  Other key returners for the Sharks this year are defender Dilja Olafsdottir (Jr., Reykjavik, Iceland), who was named Second-Team All-Region and goalkeeper Michelle Fuerst (Sr., Armonk, N.Y.), who played significant minutes in goal for the Sharks last season.

NSU received 82 votes, while conference foe and SSC runner-up last season, Rollins, was picked to finish first with 166 points along, with three first place votes.  League coaches and sports information directors voted on the season outcome.

Last year’s SSC champion, Saint Leo, was picked second in the poll, with 163 points and nine first place votes, while Tampa, Florida Tech and Lynn round out the top five.  Florida Southern, Barry and Eckerd take the seventh, eighth and ninth spots, respectively.

The Sharks begin their 2012 campaign at the Bobcat Invitational Sept. 7 and Sept. 9 against Georgia College & State and Tusculum.
