FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (2-0-0) shutout the Carson-Newman Eagles (0-2-0), 1-0, Saturday at the NSU Soccer Complex. It was the second shutout for NSU in as many games.
The NSU defense put forth another great effort, holding the Eagles to only two shots-on-goal.
Andrea Giombetti (So., Rome, Italy) had his second clean sheet in two games, with a save in each half. The NSU defense has been flawless while starting four freshman in the backfield in the first two games:
Mattia Marzetti (Rome, Italy),
Nicola Brivio (Gallarte, Italy),
Karl Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and
Matthias Bruno (Rome, Italy).
The Sharks applied pressure on the Eagles from the start, which led to a Carson-Newman own goal. In the 13th minute, the Carson-Newman goalkeeper attempted to send the ball upfield but inadvertently ricocheted the ball off a defender and into the back of his own net.
From then on, NSU controlled the action and had several chances to score. The Sharks ended the game with five of their nine shots on target. Rather than play back on defense in the final 15 minutes of the match, the Sharks continued to push for a second goal. NSU painted the goal posts down the stretch, with
Tyree Clarke (So., Birmingham, England) clanking the left post in the 79th minute and
Sharif Shears (Fr., Davie, Fla.) hitting the right post with 30 seconds remaining.
In the end,
Riccardo Bini (Fr., Varese, Italy) led the team in shots taken with three, while Clarke and Shears registered two apiece.
The Sharks will return to the NSU Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 7 against old rival St. Thomas.
