Women's Golf Wins Season-Opening Tournament

The Sharks win Yale Women's Fall Intercollegiate after placing third a year ago.

FINAL RESULTS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After placing third in the Women's Fall Intercollegiate a year ago, the Nova Southeastern University women's golf program made a season-opening statement by winning it this year to start the season. The Sharks shot a blistering 859 (-5) over the three-round tournament on the 5,901-yard, par 72 Course at Yale to start their fourth consecutive title defense.

"This is one of our best team performances in recent history against a very competitive field," head coach Amanda Brown said. "Everyone contributed especially Daniela, Abbey and Linnea who each fought for the individual medalist title and all ended up placing in the top three. This is a tremendous start to the season and I am looking forward to the team's continued success this year."

Daniela Ortiz (Morelia, Mexico) ended up taking home the individual medalist honors out of the individual field of 87. She shot an unmatched nine under 207 (73-67-67) which included two back-to-back rounds of five under to close out the tournament in the second and third rounds.

She was followed by Abbey Gittings (Sr., Tamworth, England) who finished second overall with a three under 213 (73-69-71), while newcomer to the Sharks, Linnea Johansson (Fr., Vaxjo, Sweden) finished third with a three-round 216 (E).

Out of the 17-team field, NSU was one of only two non-Division I programs competing and the Sharks top three performers out shot their closest Division I counterpart by at least one stroke. Their closest individual opposition was Princeton's Kelly Shon who finished with a three-round 217 (+1) in fourth place.

NSU took home the team title with a 26-stroke win over the 17-team field. After an opening round of 292, the Sharks fired back-to-back under par rounds including a team record 281 (-7) in the second round, beating out their previous record of 283 (-5) set at the 2011 Division II National Championship.  They finished with a 286 (-2) in the final round of play.

Penn State (298-291-296) finished second with a three-round score of 885 (+21), beating out third-place Harvard (298-294-294) that finished one stroke back with an 886 (+22). Tournament host Yale (+44) tied with Seton Hall (+44) in fourth place with three-round scores of 909 to round out the top five teams.

Rounding out the NSU team scores, Liliana Cammisa (So., Alta Garcia, Cordoba, Argentina) finished tied for 21st with a three-round 216 (+10), while Rachel Lewis (Jr., Cardiff, Wales) tied for 33rd with a three-round 231 (+15).

The Sharks will resume their fall tournament play hosting the Guy Harvey Invitational, alongside the NSU men's team Oct. 8-9. The tournament will be hosted at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which will feature 36 holes on Monday followed by an 18-hole round on Oct. 9.
