Career Workshop Helps Prepare Student-Athletes To Enter Real World

Student- Athletes spend the time to work on skills that will help guide their futures.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern athletic department, in conjunction with the NSU Office of Career Development, hosted a career workshop for student-athletes on September, 24th at the Don Taft University Center. A variety of athletes from all sports attended the event.

"Through our Career Cram session, student-athletes learn the important skills necessary to succeed in today's competitive job market including creating a game plan for reaching career goals, writing an effective resume and cover letter, and making a positive impression on potential employers when networking and interviewing.” says Dr. Tolchinksy, Manager of Student-Athlete Academic Services  “They were able to then apply the skills learned at the workshop during today's career fair with employers."

The career fair was held at the Don Taft University Center, outside of the NSU arena. The career fair aimed towards helping student-athletes connect with local and national employers to develop their networking skills. Employers that participated in the career fair included: Kraft Foods, Target, The Orange Bowl, and many more.

"After three years of doing this, I feel totally comfortable introducing myself to employers.” said baseball student-athlete Vinnie Contaldi” I got a lot of business cards, made many contacts and I feel these connections will help me when it comes time to begin my career after sports." Dee Long, from women's soccer said "I learned a lot of skills from the workshop and I think I would have a lot more confidence on an interview."

The workshop was a part of the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs programs, which was formerly CHAMPS/Life Skills. Student-Athlete Affairs programs, resources and events are designed to promote the well-being and development of student-athletes and to provide on-going education and training to athletics professionals who identify and serve student-athlete needs.

"We have collaborated on this event for three years now with the office of Career Services.” Said Cristie Ledon, Graduate Assistant “of Student-Athlete Academic Services” Through this collaboration, our student-athletes gain the skills necessary to make appropriate career decisions whether they are trying to pick a major or evaluate various job offers upon graduation."

The career fair was a great experience for many of our student-athletes to get a glimpse of real world experience brought to their own campus. Tyler Redding, a baseball student- athlete said "This was great! I got offered a job on the spot!"
