Frazier-Wong Named CRCA National Coach of the Year

Frazier-Wong led the Sharks to the program’s first rowing championship.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern rowing head coach Stephen Frazier-Wong has been named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

This is Frazier-Wong's second award of the season, as the Sharks' head coach was previously named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year.

In his first season with NSU, Frazier-Wong took an already formidable team to a new level, guiding the Sharks to their first NCAA Division II National Championship. Frazier-Wong's team won both the varsity-4 and the varsity-8 races, topping No. 1 ranked Barry and seven-time national champions Western Washington in both events.

Frazier-Wong took over a team that had two previous coaches in the last two seasons. However, he did not allow them to miss a beat, as the Sharks debuted at the No. 2 in the national rankings after a strong fall season. From there, NSU won the team title at the FIRA Championship and the varsity-8 won their event at the SIRA Championship.

NSU finished second at the SSC Championship, falling to Barry in the varsity-8 after winning the varsity-4 race. NSU would enter nationals without a win over Barry in the varsity-8. However, Frazier-Wong's Sharks exceeded all expectations and went 3-0 against the nation's top-ranked team over the course of the weekend.

Off the water, the rowing team has excelled academically. They hold a 3.3 team cumulative grade point average, one of four teams on campus to reach that mark. Kelsey Obringer (So., Port Republic, N.J.) led the squad academically, as she was named to the NCAA's Elite 89 as the top academic performer at nationals.
