Asuaje Selected by Red Sox in MLB First-Year Player Draft

Boston selects Sharks' middle infielder in 11th round

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern middle infielder Carlos Asuaje was selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Saturday, in the 11th round (323rd overall) by the Boston Red Sox.

Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.), should he sign with the Red Sox, would leave NSU as one of the most highly-decorated players to ever play for the school. He was named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore, Freshman of the Year after his first season, was a three-time All-SSC choice, and received five All-Region and three All-American honors in his career. He was also the recipient of three Gold Glove awards at the regional and national levels, at two different positions.

The 5-9, 160-pound Asuaje is second all-time among Shark hitters with 53 doubles, his 301 total bases is fifth, and his 383 career assists in the middle infield is fourth. In three seasons, he batted a collective .356 (never lower than .320 in a year), and has career totals of 140 runs scored, 206 hits, 10 home runs, 104 RBI and 67 stolen bases. As a junior, Asuaje led the team and SSC in stolen bases with 32, and topped the Sharks in doubles (13), walks (38) and on-base percentage (.441), while tying for the team lead in runs scored (40).

"We all are very excited for Carlos to be taken by the Red Sox," said Sharks head coach Greg Brown. "His many accolades speak to how successful his career here at NSU has been and his development has led to this opportunity. He has utilized his time and NSU's vast resources to put himself in position to succeed in professional baseball. This is an exciting time for Carlos, his family, and all of Shark Nation."

According to the Baseball America draft database, Asuaje is the 12th draftee in the history of the school, with the last three all coming in 2011: pitchers Sean Albury, Nick Avila and Andrew Durden.
