FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern golfer Hunter O'Mahony (Jupiter, Fla.), a rising sophomore, has qualified as an alternate for the upcoming 2013 U.S. Amateur Championships, to be held Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
O'Mahony finished third in his sectional, shooting a two-round score of 141 at the PGA National Golf Club Fazio Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He will be looking to make his second straight appearance at the U.S. Amateurs, having competed a year ago prior to his freshman season with the Sharks. At that prestigious event, held at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., O'Mahony carded a two-round score of 158 (76-82).
During his freshman campaign at NSU, O'Mahony finished in the top 10 six times, including twice notching his career-best finish of third place. He completed the season with an 11th-place finish in the NCAA Division II National Championships, as well as having a national ranking of 11th. Following the year, he was named Honorable Mention All-Sunshine State Conference and to the Division II PING All-South Region squad, and was also honored as a member of the SSC's Spring Honor Roll.
The 2013 U.S. Amateurs will take place at The Country Club, a course founded in 1882 as one of the five original clubs of the United States Golf Association. It will be set up at 7,310 yards and play to a par of 34-36—70. The Charles River Country Club in Newton, Mass., is this year's companion stroke-play qualifying course (6,574 yards, par of 35-35—70).
Stroke play will be held at both courses on Aug. 12-13, with the first round of match play in Brookline on the following day, Wednesday, Aug. 14. Both the second and third round of match play is Aug. 15, as the field is pared down to 16 players. It drops to eight in the quarterfinal round on Aug. 16, four for the semifinals on Aug. 17, and then the final one-on-one championship match takes place at The Country Club on Sunday, Aug. 18.
