Behind Melendez's three RBI, Diamond Dawgs Win Florida League Championship
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern baseball pitcher Josh Glick (Boca Raton, Fla.), a sophomore in the fall, was awarded this summer's Florida League Relief Pitcher of the Year, while his Winter Park and NSU teammate, Michael Melendez (Jr., Miramar, Fla.), was named MVP of the League Championship.
Glick, who appeared in 17 games for NSU as a true freshman, was nearly untouchable for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. In 13 games and 15.1 innings pitched, Glick gave up just six hits and did not allow a run, walking four and striking out 18. He sported a 1-0 record and led the league in saves with eight for the league champion Diamond Dawgs.
The team took home the championship on Aug. 5, defeating the Leesburg Lightning 3-0. All three runs batted in produced in the championship came from Melendez, all coming with two out. He was 2-for-4 in the contest. Melendez had 13 RBI on the season for the Diamond Dawgs and only committed one error in 196 total chances at first base.
Also starring for the league champions was pitcher Casey Kopec (So., Coral Springs, Fla.), who had a 2.34 ERA in 11 appearances out of the bullpen, spanning 23 innings. The lefthander had a record of 2-0, striking out 19 batters while only walking seven. Glick and Kopec were part of a staff that had a sparkling team ERA of 2.28.
In addition, Glick was named to the South Team for the 2013 Florida League All-Star Game on July 9. He picked up a save in that contest as well, retiring the North with a double play in the ninth to preserve the 5-2 victory.
