FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #NSU50 "Top Moments in NSU Athletics History" starts with the earliest moment in program history, the creation of the athletic program.
1980
The athletic department was created by NSU Hall of Famer and former NSU president Dr. Abraham S. Fischler and the board of trustees, with the intention of boosting undergraduate enrollment. When the decision was pushed through in 1980, NSU was made up 7,000 students with nontraditional, field-based graduate programs scattered in 22 states. The undergraduate program was limited, and athletics would serve as a central role in its growth.
As the athletic department grew from a men's basketball team to the 17-sport elite NCAA Division II program it is today, the school would develop into the premier four-year undergraduate program in Broward County. Through the years, the athletic department's role in developing the academic side of the university has never waned. The department has held above a 3.0 grade point average for over a decade.
Fischler and the board's decision in 1980 has changed lives over the years. The athletic department has served as a launching pad for several student-athletes looking to further their education through NSU's graduate and doctoral programs. Former All-Americans Stephanie Sarosi (women's basketball) and Lauren Boudreau (rowing) each entered NSU's medical program after outstanding careers as undergraduate student-athletes.
