FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team, in conjunction with the department of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, focused on team bonding while lending a hand cleaning Fort Lauderdale Beach and providing transportation in the Triple Crown Sports event.
The softball team spent a day with an education program that teaches younger kids and families about the importance of ecology in the South Florida area. While picking up trash from the beaches, the team taught the kids the roles of reefs by Fort Lauderdale Beach and how human activities effect those areas.
On spending the day with helping kids,
Krista Colburn (Sr., Meade, Colo.) states, "After a brief presentation, we helped the kids find certain items on the beach ranging from shells to plastic washed up as well as picking up trash when we found some. Our team was able to pick up five pounds of trash in an hour!"
The Sharks continued to give a helping hand on the next day in the Triple Crown showcase, "we were given golf carts to help people get from their cars to the fields with equipment as well as transporting college coaches and umpires between fields at the large Bamford Sports Complex," said Colburn.
The softball team was excited to help the community and leave a positive impact on kids. Colburn stated, "We absolutely loved working with the kids at the beach and it's an honor to work for a successful organization like Triple Crown Sports that helps provide opportunities for student-athletes, just like us, to be seen by college coaches in a professional and exciting showcase. It was also a lot of fun being at the beach and driving golf carts around all day, we have no complaints about that!"
