Urrutia Attends World Congress on Endometriosis in Sao Paulo

Urrutia’s presentation was selected to be featured at global conference.

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Nova Southeastern University track and field student-athlete Rebecca Urrutia (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) recently presented her research project at the 2014 World Congress on Endometriosis in Sau Paulo, Brazil.

"The Congress is a research conference that occurs every three years and consists of research presentations on the most recent, pioneering discoveries in the field of endometriosis," said Urrutia. "I had conducted a research project on the disease of endometriosis this past summer, and under the guidance of my research mentor, I applied to have my work considered for the congress. Much to my surprise, my study was accepted for presentation at this world conference!

"The trip entailed spending a week in Sao Paulo to attend various research workshops and sessions. Then, I was required to present my research via a poster presentation on two separate occasions. Approximately only 290 posters were chosen worldwide and I was one of the youngest presenters at the congress. Most of the other presenters were medical doctors or professionals completing their PhD's or post-docs, so I was honored to have been chosen. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and it definitely confirmed my passion to become a healthcare professional who is also interested in research!"

The event is put on by the World Endometriosis Society, which promotes the exchange of clinical and scientific experience, thought and investigation among those committed to advancing the understanding of endometriosis to improve treatments (and quality of life) for women with the disease.

In addition to her academic achievements, Urrutia is one of the premier pole vaulters in the NCAA South Region and recently received All-South Region honors by the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
