SSC Mayor’s Cup Released with NSU Women Tabbed Third

Sharks men finish seventh overall in final standings.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference has released the 2013-14 Mayors' Cup, the conference's all-sports trophy. The Nova Southeastern University women finished third overall in the conference while the men finished seventh.

First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award was traditionally sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located. In the women's division, points are awarded based on final regular-season conference standings in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. For cross country, golf, rowing and swimming points are award based on a team's finish at their respective conference championship event.

The NSU women claimed a total of 44 points overall, less than 10 away from first-place Tampa. NSU earned a program-best 7.5 points in women's basketball, where the Sharks won the SSC Tournament and went on to win the South Region Championship for the second straight year. Softball had a strong year and earned seven points based off the team's third-place finish.

Women's golf earned 6.5 points while the cross country team earned six points, second to only Tampa. Rowing took the maximum of five points while swimming and diving matched at five.

The men finished seventh in a tight race, with their point total of 23.5 just eight out of third place. Without men's tennis and lacrosse, the Sharks have less opportunity to score as many points as other teams above them. The Sharks were led by the men's golf team, which took six points in the standings. Men's basketball, which advanced to the second round of the SSC Tournament, finished with 4.5 points. Cross country, swimming and diving and baseball each earned four points.
