FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The summer continues for six former Nova Southeastern University baseball alums playing professional baseball and making headlines around the nation has become the norm for this group.
J.D. Martinez has continued to post solid numbers at the plate while flashing the leather in the field earning himself a spot on ESPN Baseball Tonight's Web Gems on June 9
th. Martinez is currently hitting .257 with three homeruns and 14 runs batted in 25 games. On May 19
th, Martinez hit a game-tying homerun against the Cleveland Indians. Before being called up earlier in the season, Martinez was hitting .308 while crushing ten homeruns in just 65 at-bats for the Tigers Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens.
Mike Fiers was called up to the Milwaukee Brewers to replace pitcher Tyler Thornburg, who was placed on the 15-day DL. Fiers made his debut on June 10
th against the New York Mets, tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Before being called up, Fiers was putting up video game numbers. In 67.2 innings pitched for the Brewers Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds, Fiers fanned 92 batters while allowing just nine walks to go along with a 2.53 ERA.
Miles Mikolas was called up to the Texas Rangers May 14
th to bring depth to their bullpen. Although Mikolas did not make an appearance for the Rangers, he has posted outstanding numbers for the their Triple-A affiliate, the Round Rock Express. Mikolas is 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA while striking out 23 batters and allowing just one walk so far this season.
Carlos Asuaje has been putting on a show for the Boston Red Sox Single-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive. Through 60 games, Asuaje is leading the South Atlantic League in OPS while being ranked second in slugging and triples. Asuaje is also third in the league in triples and fifth in OBP. His team-high seven homeruns have placed him on the South Atlantic League All-Star team. Asuaje is now ranked the 32
nd overall prospect in the Red Sox organization.
Nick Avila is currently pitching for the Detroit Tigers Double-A affiliate, the Erie Seawolves. Avila has 13 strikeouts in his 11 appearances. Avila will make his next start on the back end of the doubleheader this Saturday.
After spending time in extended spring training, Brett Clements has been assigned to the Houston Astros rookie-ball affiliate, the Greeneville Astros. Clements will look to build on his .222 average from last year and continue his solid defense behind the plate.
