Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (2-0-1) opened its home schedule Wednesday with a 6-2 win over the Ave Maria Gyrenes (0-2-0) at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Sharks put on an offensive show in front of a packed crowd, with a recorded attendance of 683 fans. Phi Gamma Delta hosted a pregame tailgate party and, along with the NSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, marched the student body into the game right before kickoff and created one of the loudest crowds in the history of NSU soccer.
Sharks put themselves on the board in the fifth minute, when
Viktor Jonsson (So., Reykjavik, Iceland) scored his first goal of the season.
Guido Riffeser (Jr., Balzano, Italy) took the match's first corner kick and sent a great ball to Jonsson, who headed in the opening score.
"We knew we had to have a great start and score an early goal to break their confidence and build ours," said Jonsson. "It's been a good start to the season, especially with this 6-2 victory. We struggled last year and scrapped to a 1-0 win, so this was a good win."
The second goal came in the 14th minute, as
Karl Enarsson (Jr., Gothenburg, Sweden) scored his first goal of 2014 and his second career goal against Ave Maria. The goal came on another corner, this time from
Mattia Marzetti (Jr., Rome, Italy). The junior sent the ball into the box for
Matthias Bruno (Jr., Rome, Italy), who's shot bounced off the keeper and to the feet of Enarsson.
A goal in the 20th minute not only served as the game-winner but the first career goal for freshman
Jacob Robbie (Plantation, Fla.). The Broward local made his first career start Wednesday and took advantage of the opportunity. The attack started on the left side, as
Stefano Fanfoni (Jr., Cremona, Italy) played a through ball into the box to
Santiago Camacho (Fr., Bogota, Colombia). Instead of initially striking, Camacho dodged one defender and played the ball to an open Robbie, who scored right in front of the goal.
Enarsson would close out the first-half scoring run with his second goal in the 31st minute. Riffeser once again sent a great ball into the box on a corner kick that ricocheted off the goalkeeper. Enarsson once again put himself in prime position to score and put the Shark ahead by four goals.
It took just over five minute for the Sharks to strike again in the second half. The Sharks' best free kick opportunity came in the 51st minute, with
Victor Cardoso (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) taking it after just entering the match. Cardoso took a flawless strike, bending the ball into the top right corner of the net for his first goal in a NSU uniform.
After going up 5-0, NSU allowed two straight goals from the Gyrenes. The first came in the 65th minute, breaking the Sharks' run of 264 minute of shutout soccer. The final Gyrenes goal came in the 75th minute, on a highlight-reel strike from 40 yards out by Juan Carlos Burcaram.
Still up by three goals, NSU put the exclamation point on the night with the first goal of the season from senior captain
Andrea Spuntarelli (Rome, Italy). In the 84th minute, Marzetti earned his second assist on a cross into the box from the right side that found Spuntarelli, scoring into the bottom left corner of the goal.
NSU outshot the visiting team, 21-6, with nine shots coming on target. NSU took 13 corner kicks in the match and had four of their six goals coming on set pieces.
The Sharks will take the week off before traveling to Lynn on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
