FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
Monica Sapp (Jr., Miami, Fla.) of the track and field team at Nova Southeastern University has earned the prestigious Minority Teacher Education Scholarship from the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers.
Sapp will receive the scholarship over her last two years at NSU and has agreed to teach in Dade or Broward County after graduating.
"Being a teacher has been my dream since I was in the fifth grade," stated Sapp. "I wanted to make a difference in my students' lives by educating them to be successful in the classroom and in life. I was so excited when I received the scholarship because I worked hard to maintain my grades and I wrote a good essay, and I was getting recognized for that."
The Minority Teacher Education Scholars program is a collaborative performance-based scholarship program for African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American and Native American students. The participants in the program include Florida's Florida College System institutions and its public and private universities that have teacher education programs.
As an athlete at NSU, Sapp has been a contributor on the track since stepping on campus. Last season, Sapp was an All-South Region honoree as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that had a season-best time of 3:49.82. Sapp has also been an active member of the NSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served on the groups E-Board during the 2013-14 season.
