MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team dominated the 2015 All-Sunshine State Conference team, earning seven awards, the most of any team in the SSC. In his fifth season, head coach
Greg Brown was named the Coach of the Year, while
Justin Garcia (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) was named the Player of the Year.
Garcia is joined by teammates
Zachary Westcott (Sr., Weston, Fla.),
Ryan Castellanos (Jr., Davie, Fla.) and
Alex Mateo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) on the All-SSC First Team. Westcott was named first team relief pitcher, while Castellanos and Mateo were tabbed first team starting pitchers. The lone representative for the Sharks on the All-SSC Second Team is leadoff hitter and centerfielder,
Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.).
Greg Brown – SSC Coach of the Year Head coach Greg Brown has led the Sharks to a program record 38 wins in 2015 and the highest seed in NCAA postseason history at No. 2 in the NCAA South Region. In only his fifth season at the helm, Brown will lead the Sharks to their third postseason in program history, all of which have come under his watch. Brown has amassed an impressive 167-80 record during his time at NSU, the highest percentage in the history of the program.
Justin Garcia – SSC Player of the Year / All-SSC First Team Outfielder Justin Garcia has re-written the NSU record book in 2015, launching a school record 24 home runs in the regular season, seven more than the previous record of 17 held by Bryan Cook, Ed Mackie and Areo Regoli. Garcia has struck fear into SSC pitching staff's all year long, hitting 20 of his 24 home runs against conference opponents. Garcia's .901 slugging percentage is the highest in SSC in 27 years, when Tino Martinez slugged .957 for Tampa in 1988. Garcia shined in the middle of the Sharks' order this year, driving in a team high 67 runs and a SSC leading .484 on base percentage.
Zachary Westcott – All-SSC First Team Relief Pitcher Zachary Westcott has been the most dominant pitcher on the Sharks' staff this year, averaging 12.6 K's per nine innings, 1.2 more K's per nine than the next highest in the SSC of 11.4. Westcott has a 0.70 ERA against SSC opponents, 1.61 points lower than the next lowest ERA. Conference opponents hit just .156 against Westcott, as he has allowed 14 hits and three runs over 25.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen against the eight other SSC teams.
Ryan Castellanos – All-SSC First Team Starting Pitcher Ryan Castellanos has been a staple in the NSU rotation in 2015, tossing the third game of the series in 12 of his 13 starts. Castellanos tossed a SSC-high 90.2 innings in 2015, on his way to nine wins, which is tied for the conference lead with his teammate Mateo. Castellanos threw three complete games this year, with his best start coming against Rollins on April 18, when he allowed just one run in nine innings. Castellanos' ERA of 3.08 is the lowest among the weekend rotation.
Alex Mateo – All-SSC First Team Starting Pitcher Just like Castellanos, Alex Mateo has been an essential part of the weekend rotation in 2015, making 13 starts and recording a 9-1 record. Mateo's electric "stuff" has led to a SSC-high 87 K's, five more than the next highest of 82. Mateo's best start came against Eckerd on April 25, when he tossed 8.0 innings, while striking out nine batters. His season high in K's came against Florida Tech on April 11, when Mateo struck out 10 batters.
Roche Woodard – All-SSC Second Team Outfielder Roche Woodard has started all 49 games for the Sharks this year, hitting leadoff and roaming centerfield. Woodard led the teams in at-bats (206), hits (74), doubles (18), triples (5) and stolen bases (14). Woodard's combination of speed and power has been a huge advantage for the Sharks' offense in 2015.
