FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Now that the NBA and NHL seasons have come to a close, the boys of summer take center stage, as baseball season is in full swing. EIght former Sharks highlight this addition of "Sharks In The Pros", led by the "fab" four in J.D. Martinez, Mike Fiers, Miles Mikolas and Carlos Asuaje.
J.D. Martinez – Detroit Tigers Hitting behind one of the biggest power threats in all of baseball (Yoenis Cespedes), Martinez has produced solid numbers so far in 2015, hitting .265 with 13 home runs and 34 RBI for the lethal Detroit offense. For American League outfielders, Martinez ranks in the top 10 in at-bats (245), runs (35), hits (65), doubles (13), home runs (13), RBI (34), slugging percentage (.478) and OPS (.805). In his last 10 games, Martinez has launched four home runs and driving in 12 runs. Martinez will look to continue his success at the plate throughout the season, as the Tigers gear up for a big second half of the season.
Fun Fact: Since the start of the 2014 season, J.D. Martinez leads that MLB in opposite field home runs with 12. No other player in the bigs has more than 10.
Mike Fiers – Milwaukee Brewers After a strong 2014 season that saw Fiers go 6-5 with a 2.13 ERA, including a 14 strikeout
performance against the Chicago Cubs on August 14, 2014, the right-handed hurler has had an unlucky start to his 2015 campaign, losing three games in which he has given up two runs or less and receiving a no decision in four other games that he has allowed two runs or less. Nonetheless, Fiers leads the Brewers staff in strikeouts with 82 and games started with 14.
Miles Mikolas – Yomiuri Giants
Miles Mikolas was offered a once in a lifetime chance to play for the Yomiuri Giants, a team referred to as the New York Yankees of Japan, and he jumped all over it. Miles and his wife Lauren are thoroughly enjoying their time in Japan so far, as Miles is making an impact on the field and his wife has become a
local celebrity off of the field. So far this season, Mikolas is 2-3 with a 2.94 ERA. Mikolas has struck out 47 batters and walked just 11, and has had a few dominant starts this year, earning him a
feature in the Japan Times.
Carlos Asuaje – Portland Sea Dogs
Ranked the 25
th overall prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization and the highest ranked prospect on the AA Portland Sea Dogs, Asuaje has set and achieved many of his goals in professional base thus far, and has put himself in great position to achieve the ultimate goal of any baseball player and play in the MLB. In his first year in AA, Asuaje is hitting .245 with a .352 on-base percentage, while driving in 32 runs in 220 at-bats. Asuaje was recently featured in an
article written by Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press Herald, talking about life on and off of the baseball field.
The 2015 Draft Class Justin Garcia,
Alexander Fernandez and
Ryan Castellanos were recently selected in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers, respectively. Garcia was taken in the 17th round, while Fernandez and Castellanos were selected in the 25th round.
Independent BallZachary Westcott recently signed a contract to play for the Lincoln Saltdogs, an independent baseball team based in Lincoln, Neb.
