FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Former Nova Southeastern University men's soccer player Victor Nirrenold has signed a professional contract to play for Fleetwood Town of England's League One, the Football Association's third division.
"We are excited for the opportunity that arose for Victor," said head coach Giuseppe DePalo. "After his performances last season and in the PDL this summer, it became obvious that he was ready for the next level.
"Ultimately, our purpose is to prepare our players who have the ability to play professionally, and to graduate them. Victor has the opportunity to complete his remaining classes through online coursework, while at the same time realizing his boyhood dream of playing the game he loves for a living. While he will be missed on the field, we will all be supporting his career from afar."
Nirrenold, who's been given the No. 15 jersey, will look to bolster the defense for Fleetwood. Five matches into the season, the "Cod Army" hold seven points, three shy of the playoff for promotion into the English Championship. Nirrenold has already appeared in a developmental match for Fleetwood, logging 90 minutes in a shutout win against Championship side Burnley.
Last year for NSU, Nirrenold played up front where he scored three goals and tallied two assists. Overall, he helped lead the Sharks to an SSC semifinal appearance, where the Sharks lost a hard-fought game to the NCAA National Champions in Lynn. Nirrenold appeared in 15 matches, starting 13.
Nirrenold joins a handful of former Sharks currently competing professionally, including Aly Hassan of the NASL's Ottawa Fury.
