Wright, Sickert and Wahlstrom Earn SSC Honors

Trio of student-athletes receive weekly awards for their performances last week.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Three Nova Southeastern University student-athletes were chosen as their respective sport's Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
 
Women's basketball player Kayla Wright and men's swimmer Thiago Sickert each garner their second weekly conference awards, while women's swimmer Emma Wahlstrom receives her first recognition of the season for her performance against Limestone and Florida Southern.
 
Thiago Sickert dominated in the pool this week winning all six races he swam in, while achieving a NCAA B-Standard time in each. Against Limestone, Sickert swam a NCAA B-Standard time of 20.55 to take the win in the men's 50-free. He followed that with a win in the men's 100-yard freestyle, swimming a NCAA B-Standard time of 45.03. On Saturday against Florida Southern, Sickert opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, swimming a NCAA B-Standard time of 3:19.32. Sickert then won the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a NCAA B-Standard time of 1:50.05. In the 100-yard freestyle, Sickert swam a NCAA B-Standard time of 45.89. He ended his week with a win in the men's 100-yard butterfly, swimming a NCAA B-Standard time of 49.14.
 
Against Limestone, Emma Wahlstrom continued her winning ways, swimming a NCAA B-Standard time of 1:51.76 in the women's 200-yard freestyle, fast enough for a first-place finish. Wahlstrom then swam a NCAA B-Standard time of 5:03.59 in the 500-yard freestyle to close her meet against Limestone. Against Florida Southern, Wahlstrom was a part of the women's 400-yard medley relay team that swam a victorious time of 3:54.31. Wahlstrom then won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle's, swimming times of 52.42 and 1:52.94 (NCAA B-Standard). She closed her week with a second-place finish in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming a time of 1:37.54.
 
Kayla Wright continued her recent hot stretch with 26 points in a one-point win over Eckerd last Wednesday. In 19 minutes played, she was 11-of-13 from the field, setting a new personal single-game best, for her third 25+-point game of the season. She also added four rebounds, three on the offensive end. With this strong performance, Wright took over the team lead for points-per-game.
