NSU Lands Four on D2CCA All-South Region Teams

Sharks earn most selections among Sunshine State Conference programs

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Two weeks removed from capturing All-Sunshine State Conference honors, four Nova Southeastern women's soccer players added more accolades Wednesday by being named Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) Second Team All-South Region.

Freshmen Hannah Christophe, Ida Norstrom and Emma Santamaki earned their first career all-region recognition, while senior Nichole Poppe picked up her second after landing a second team all-southeast region selection a year ago as a member of Mount Olive. The Sharks' four honorees across both teams rank most among all SSC schools.

Christophe cracks the list after not only being selected first team all-conference, but becoming the first Nova Southeastern player since Lauren Prow back in 2007 to take home the SSC's Freshman of the Year award. Christophe finished second in the league in goals (10) and third overall in points (21). The Brampton, Ontario native also netted three game-winning scores, fourth-most in the SSC, and recorded a pair of hat tricks in wins over Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic. Christophe is just the third freshman in program history to reach the double-digit goal mark in a single season, and first to do so in the last 10 years.

The anchor of the SSC's top-ranked defense, Norstrom was deservedly recognized after topping the conference in both goals-against average (0.641 GAA) and save percentage (0.870). The freshman keeper was the only player among all regular starters during the regular season to surrender less than double-digit goals, and more impressively ends the year with a notable on-going shutout streak at the NSU Soccer Complex. In seven home starts in 2016, Norstrom failed to allow a single goal, a stretch spanning 615:52.

In her lone season with the Sharks, Poppe provided senior leadership for a youthful squad filled with 26 freshman in addition to her offensive prowess. In 16 starts this season, the former transfer tallied three goals to go along with her team-high four assists. Her assist and shot numbers both ranked among the Top-10 in the league.

Santamaki, meanwhile, proved to be the key cog on the Sharks' back line that gave opposing offenses fits throughout 2016. She started in each of the 17 games in which she appeared, helping NSU's stifling defense notch eight shutouts and yield multiple goals to only three teams during the regular season.

West Florida's Marjorie Boilesen was tabbed as the South Region Player of the Year.

NSU concluded the 2016 season with a record of 12-4-3 following its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
