Schedule of EventsFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving will have six men and six women competing at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships beginning this Wednesday, March 9 through March 12 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
"Most of the athletes from NSU that have been selected for the NCAA Championships are veterans to the meet," said head coach
Hollie Bonewit-Cron. "Their experience not only helps them achieve even greater success from previous years, but also helps the newcomers follow great leadership."
While 22 Sharks put up NCAA Division II B qualifying times this season, only 12 officially made the cut to compete at the championship. The men will be represented by
Marco Aldabe,
Anton Lobanov,
Thiago Sickert,
Victor Tarin,
David Van Der Colff and
Blake Woodrow. The women attending are
Courtney DeVeny,
Caroline Oster,
Sydney Panzarino,
Jordan Shows,
Emma Wahlstrom and
Malin Westman.
"These athletes have received the additional rest and preparation they need so that the entire team traveling to the championships is ready to compete against the toughest competitors in Division II," continued Bonewit-Cron. "Having recently competed in the SSC Championships with so many talented athletes from around the country, the Sharks are excited for what's to come in Indianapolis."
In order to qualify to compete at the national championship, student-athletes are required to meet NCAA Standard-A or NCAA Standard-B times during the season in their respective event(s). All swimmers who post an A-cut automatically qualify while the rest of the field is made up of the best B-cut times. At the end of the meet, the team with the highest combined point total will be crowned the overall 2016 NCAA Division II National Champions.
Most recently, the Sharks took second place at the Sunshine State Conference Championship. The team was led by
Thiago Sickert who won titles in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and was named men's Swimmer of the Meet. In Division II, Sickert holds the second best time in the 200-fly and is in the top five in the 100-fly and 100-free.
Anton Lobanov will be expected to defend his title as he holds the NCAA Division II record, SSC overall record, SSC Championship meet record and NSU record in the 200-yard backstroke and put up a NCAA Division II A qualifying time of 1:55.06 at the SSC Championship. He is also first in the division in the 100-yard breaststroke.
On the women's side,
Emma Wahlstrom (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) saw five NCAA Division II B qualifying times this season. At the SSC Championship, Wahlstrom claimed victory in the 200-back with a B-cut time of 2:01.31.
Courtney DeVeny (So., Estero, Fla) finished just sixth one hundredths of a second behind Wahlstrom claiming second place in 2:01.37, which is also a NCAA Standard-B time.
NSU will also have strong representation in the relay events. Both the men and the women hit NCAA Standard-B times in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. At the conference championship, the Sharks won the men's 400-yard medley relay, men's 800-yard freestyle relay and women's 200-yard medley relay.
A total of 340 student-athletes, including 157 men and 183 women, are scheduled to compete in the championships. Thirty-one teams will participate for the men's title and 38 teams will compete for the women's championship while Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) returning to defend their 2015 title. Beginning Wednesday, daily preliminary rounds for swimming events will get underway at 10:30 a.m. and finals will be conducted at 6 p.m. each day.
