Murphy of Women's Basketball Named to National Good Works Team

Senior student-athlete one of just 10 women in nation honored on Tuesday

INDIANAPOLIS – Nova Southeastern University women's basketball player Alexis Murphy has been chosen as one of just a select few student-athletes nationwide to be a part of the prestigious 2016 Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams®.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Allstate Insurance Company selected 20 members to the team, 10 male and 10 female, recognizing players at all levels of college basketball that have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through giving back to their communities. In all, 103 WBCA nominees and the 154 NABC nominees were submitted by sports information directors and college basketball coaches across the country.

Of the 10 female basketball players selected on Tuesday, five come from NCAA Division I, while Murphy is one of only five combined honorees from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. She was nominated, as one of 103 due to her success on and off the court.

The Carlisle, Ohio native is a four-year guard for the nationally-ranked women's basketball team. In each of her three completed seasons with the squad, she has helped lead the Sharks to the program's first three South Region titles, and subsequent Elite Eight appearances, in addition to two Sunshine State Conference regular season and two postseason conference championships. She ranks in the women's top 10 all-time in 3-pointers made, assists and games played.

Off the floor, Murphy has founded two companies: Hoop Through Life and Hoop for Haiti. She organizes youth camp across the United States with the former organization; the latter is a non-profit that helped build a basketball court in the impoverished nation and works with an existing orphanage to provide food, education and water. She will travel there this summer to hold Destiny Village's first-ever basketball camp.

From the nominations, the teams were chosen by special voting panels, headlined by former University of Tennessee basketball athlete, NCAA champion and 10-time WNBA All-Star Tamika Catchings and former Duke University basketball athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill. In addition to president of the west territory for Allstate Insurance Company Thomas Clarkson, Hill and Catchings, the 2016 Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® selection panel members include: former college basketball student-athletes Clark Kellogg (Ohio State University / CBS Sports), and Alana Beard (Duke University); media members Seth Davis (Sports Illustrated/CBS), Dana O'Neil (ESPN), Carolyn Peck (ESPN) and LaChina Robinson (ESPN/FOX); former head coaches Bobby Cremins (Georgia Institute of Technology/College of Charleston), Seth Greenberg (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), Marsha Sharp (Texas Tech University) and Nell Fortner (Auburn University); and current college basketball coach Coquese Washington (Penn State University).
