FORT LAUDERDALE – On Thursday, Nova Southeastern University head baseball coach
Greg Brown was presented with the President's Award for Excellence in Community Service during the annual NSU Team 2020 faculty and staff gathering at the Rick Case Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
Brown was among several considered for the staff award for his work in the community in 2015-16 and presenting the award was President, CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.
"This is a very humbling award to receive and I am very proud to have built a culture that focuses on the core value of community," Brown said. "The student-athletes are my coaches should all be commended for their community service efforts as they have truly embodied the ideology of servant leadership."
On the heels of receiving the 2016 ABCA Division II National Coach of the Year Award, Brown's insistence on carrying on the tradition established by Director of Athletics
Michael Mominey of working with the Miracle League of West Pines each year, is one of the community service efforts that helped Brown earn the award. Each year, he organizes a date to take the entire NSU baseball team out to the field and they engage with Miracle League participants on the field assisting those with special needs.
In addition to his continued efforts with Miracle League, Brown also organizes annual toy drives that are donated to sick children at Joe DiMaggio's Hospital at Christmas. His community work goes beyond helping those in need as well. He takes his skills, leadership and experience to the youth baseball diamonds to help mentor and educate youth in the community and mentor adult coaches who coach these youth baseball teams with Cooper City Optimist, Bamford Park and Rotary Park youth programs by putting on skill and coaching clinics. He also works directly with the Kings Youth Baseball Fund, Inc., which is a program charged with reviving the game of baseball within the inner-city community.
As a continued effort to remain involved in the community, Brown also works with the NSU Alvin Sherman Library youth reading program, Plant Garden programs with local elementary schools and the Buddy Walk that supports Autism.
