FORT LAUDERDALE – The Nova Southeastern University student-athletes continue to put just as much focus on academic achievement and success in the classroom as they do in their individual and team performance in their respective sports. As a result of their hard work and dedication, along with the support of coaches and members of the Academic Services and Student-Athlete Support staff, the athletic department posted a 3.26 cumulative grade point average for the Fall 2016 semester, the highest semester GPA in program history.
This is the seventh consecutive semester where the department GPA has been at 3.10 or above ad the end of the academic term and the first that it has been over a 3.20.
"We could not be more proud of our student-athletes for the hard work they have put in this past semester and the results are a clear indication of their commitment to academic achievement and what it means to be an NSU Shark," said Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services & Student-Athlete Support, CA Tochinsky, Ed.D.
Out of 330 student-athletes, 248 (75 percent) recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the conclusion of the fall term, while 19 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Twelve percent posted GPA between 3.99 and 3.80 while just over 44 percent posted GPA between 3.25 and 3.79.
Of the Sharks 17 intercollegiate NCAA teams, 15 finished with a team GPA greater than 3.0. The women's sport with the highest Fall 2016 GAP was the women's basketball team, which posted a 3.64 GPA for the term, while the men's cross country team posted the highest mark among the seven Sharks' men's teams, finishing the fall term with a 3.41 GPA.
Dr. Tochinsky added, "Our student-athletes put in hours of work behind the scenes, not only in their sport but also with their academics. It is always exciting to see that work pay off. Our faculty and Student-Athlete Academic Services staff, and other Student Services departments across campus should be commended as well for their support they provide to our student-athletes throughout the year. From student-athletes, to the coaches and administration, there is a strong commitment toward academic success and these results show that the programs we have put in place are working."
