FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After helping the No. 13 Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team maintain their first-place lead in the Sunshine State Conference standings with three goals in two games last week,
Emma Heikkila received her first-career SSC Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
During a pair of tough road-SSC matchups, Heikkila carried the Sharks to a crucial 1-0-1 record against Barry and Florida Southern. The Sharks entered Wednesday's matchup against Barry winless at Buccaneer Field since 2009. That all changed when the Tornio, Finland native tied the match 1-1 with her third goal of the season in the 80
th minute and then assisted on the golden goal just three minutes into overtime giving the Sharks a 2-1 win.
Just three days later, Heikkila struck twice, carrying the Sharks to a 2-2 draw against a tough Florida Southern team who had yet to surrender more than one goal in a game this season. The sophomore found the back of the net in the opening minute, the fastest goal recorded under third-year head coach,
John Constable. Tied 1-1, Heikkila recorded her second multi-goal game of her career in the 64
th minute with her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Following both performances, Heikkila now leads the SSC in conference goals (five), goals per game (.800), points (10) and points per game (two).
NSU will return to the pitch with a pair of home matches starting this Wednesday against SSC foe Palm Beach Atlantic in the Battle of the Fish at 7:00 p.m. The Sharks defeated the Sailfish on the road 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 5. The Sharks will then host the defending SSC Champions Saint Leo on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
