FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the third time in five weeks, the No. 3 Nova Southeastern men's and women's swimming teams have swept the Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Week awards as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Freshman duo of
Jenna Johns and
Samuel Brettmann secured the third sweep of the SSC weekly accolades following solid performances that led to a win over NJCAA juggernaut, Indian River State College.
Johns wins her third award of the season after leading the women with four first-place finishes and three NCAA-standard times, guiding the Sharks to a 193-69 romp over the reigning NJCAA National Champion Pioneers. The Ambler, Pa. native began as the third leg in the 200 yard medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:44.48, .21 shy of the national standard. Johns then dominated the 100 yard backstroke with an NCAA B-Cut time, 56.47, two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The freshman then set a season-best in the 100 fly with another NCAA B-Cut time, 55.40. Just like the 100 back, Johns finished two seconds ahead of the runner-up. The day ended with Johns as the anchor in the 200 yard freestyle relay that finished with a season-best and an NCAA A-Cut time of 1:34.72.
Brettmann claims his first-ever weekly award following his best performance this season as the freshman came up clutch with a pair of wins, leading to a nail-biting 135-127 win over Indian River. The freshman started with a win in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a season-best time of 9:37.22. Brettmann then ended his day with a win in the 400 yard individual medley and his second season-best time of the day, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of the runner-up at 4:04.45.
The men have the next two weeks off while the women will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Lynn on Friday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
