FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team grabbed three All-Conference nods from the Sunshine State Conference, as announced on Wednesday afternoon by the conference office.
In balloting of all of the league member head coaches,
Maria Bardeeva was named the 2016-17 SSC Freshman of the Year,
Christen Prasse was selected to the All-SSC Second Team and
Samantha Logan earned a spot on the 2016-17 All-Newcomer Team.
Bardeeva is the second Shark in history to garner the Freshman of the Year Award, first won by Danielle Robinson during the 2011-12 season. In her 26 games played this season, the freshman center was 47.9 percent from the field and averaged 7.7 points per game. She has also pulled down 76 total boards and has made 14 blocks so far this season.
""Maria had a very productive freshman season and has become a real presence on the offensive end, while being a solid defender," explained head coach
LeAnn Freeland-Curry. "Maria has a sincere interest in developing her game, so we're excited to know her best basketball is still ahead."
For Prasse, this is her first postseason award during her career at NSU. The junior guard, who after back-to-back 20+ performances, is averaging a team-leading 12.0 points per game. Prasse also adds 4.5 assists a game, which remains a league-high.
"Christen has evolved throughout the season as not only a great player, but a great leader for our program at the point guard position," boasted Freeland-Curry. "She continues to challenge herself and our team daily."
Logan, a senior guard from Corona, Calif., is the team's third-highest scorer, averaging 9.1 points a game while connecting 35.7 percent of the time from beyond the arc with a team-high 60 three pointers. Logan also holds a No. 1 spot in the conference with her 8.8 boards per game.
"Sami's presence has been a force on both ends of the floor all season," said Freeland-Curry. "She is the first player I've coached at NSU to lead the league in rebounding."
For the 13th consecutive year, Nova Southeastern will enter the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament tonight, Wednesday, Mar. 1, hosting the Tampa Spartans at 7:00 p.m. in the Rick Case Arena.
