FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - While the on-the-field accolades are still a few weeks away from likely piling in for
Brandon Gomez, the Nova Southeastern slugger has already begun to see his work in the classroom pay off, capturing College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District honors on Thursday.
Named to the District 5 team, Gomez is one of only eight players from the Sunshine State Conference to be recognized thanks to a 3.35 cumulative grade point average in Criminal Justice.
The teams are voted on by the sports information directors of each respective district, and student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's contests and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 in order to be eligible.
In starting all 46 games of the season thus far for the Sharks, Gomez has batted .291 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI's. His RBI total currently ranks fifth in the SSC, while his 11 dingers have moved him into a tie with Detroit Tiger J.D. Martinez atop the list for most career home runs in Nova Southeastern history. Gomez has recorded multiple RBI's in a single-game 13 times in 2017, setting a new career high with six against Merrimack on March 13.
The native of Miami Beach will now be in the running for CoSIDA Academic All-American, which will be voted on beginning May 9.
Gomez and the Sharks will wrap up the regular season in a three-game series with Florida Tech set to begin Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. For complete coverage, log onto
