"We are very excited to announce the newest membership of our Hall of Fame - the class of 2017," boasted Director of Athletics,
Michael Mominey. "This event continues to allow us to recognize the best and brightest alumni from the past and connect their contributions with our current departmental success. We congratulate Shurell, Mike and Romain and look forward to seeing all of our Hall of Famers return to campus for a great event."
The following individuals will be inducted into the NSU Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2017:
Shurell Burton | Women's Soccer | 2005-2008
Shurell Burton was truly one of a kind during her playing days as a Shark. A four-year member of the women's soccer team, she continuously caused fits for the opposition and shattered more than her fair share of program records. Burton holds five career school marks, including: goals (40), game-winning goals (11), hat tricks (3), assists (18) and points (98). She is also tied for the NSU single-game record for assists with three. She currently ranks second all-time in most goals in a season (15), game-winning goals (6), and points (34). Burton's notable numbers landed her All-Sunshine State Conference selections in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In addition, she was a three-time NSCAA All-South Region pick, while garnering Second Team All-American honors as a junior. She served as team captain during her senior campaign and was also an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee throughout her four-year career.
She graduated from NSU with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, with a minor in counseling in 2009 and a Master's degree in Athletic Administration in 2011. Following her playing career, she served as an Assistant Coach for the Sharks from 2010-2012. She is currently the Director of Communications at Suntree Country Club. She resides in Palm Bay, Florida with her husband William Reader.
Mike Fiers | Baseball | 2009
In a single spring, Mike Fiers accomplished more as a Shark than most accomplish over the course of their four-year careers. Under former head coach and current Director of Athletics
Michael Mominey, Fiers compiled a record of 10-3 with a 2.65 earned run average in 2009. Along the way, he also posted three complete games and limited opponents to a .209 batting average. Over the course of 108.2 innings pitched, Fiers tallied 145 strikeouts to lead the nation while simultaneously setting a new NSU single-season strikeout record, still held to this day. For his efforts, he collected both NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings All-American honors in addition to multiple All-South region selections.
Immediately following his senior campaign, Fiers was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 22nd round (676th overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft. Just over two years later, he made his Major League debut with the Brewers on September 14, 2011, marking the second NSU player in program history to reach the game's highest level. Fiers won nine games in his first full major league season in 2012 with Milwaukee before begin traded to the Houston Astros in 2015, the same year he made his first appearance in the postseason against the Kansas City Royals. On Aug. 21, 2015, Fiers tossed his first-career no-hitter against the Dodgers. Now in his seventh season in the "Bigs", Fiers has become a key member of the Astros' starting rotation, helping the organization transform into one of the premier clubs in Major League Baseball.
Romain Onteniente | Men's Soccer | 2006-2009
Romain Onteniente is one of the finest men's soccer players to ever wear a Nova Southeastern uniform. Onteniente remains the program's only player since 2004 to take home Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year honors, doing so in 2007 – the same year he tallied 18 goals and six assists. His goals and points totals as a sophomore each rank tied for third all-time in a single season, while his 11 assists as a junior rank second all-time in a single season. More impressively, though, are Onteniente's career numbers, as he owns the title as the only player in NSU history to rank among the Top-4 in: goals (37), game-winning goals (8), assists (23) and points (97). The former midfielder was twice named an All-SSC honoree. In addition, he was a two-time, All-South region selection and landed on the SSC All-Tournament team in 2009.
He graduated from NSU in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology to go along with his minors in Chemistry and Psychology. He earned a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine in 2014 from Barry University and was nationally recognized by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, as the recipient of the Dr. Michael L. Stone award for outstanding professional conduct. He graduated from the residency program at Mercy Hospital as chief resident this past June.
Additionally, he co-founded Podiatry Overseas Association, a nonprofit organization, which takes podiatric medicine on a humanitarian journey abroad, treating patients in remote areas of the world. Onteniente is currently works for Merritt Island Foot & Ankle. He resides in Melbourne, Florida with his wife, Maeva. The couple are expecting their first child in November.
