Charles Johnson joined the NSU cross country and track and field staff in the winter of 2015. He is currently a graduate assistant coach with specialization in the throwing events and combined events.

In his third season, Johnson saw a breakout season in the throwing events as personal-bests were set in all four events in 2017. During the season, Johnson saw the women’s discus and hammer fall as well as the oldest field record, the men’s javelin. At the Peach Belt Conference Championship, Kamaria Johnson became the first thrower in program history to win more than one event as the sophomore won the hammer and shot put. Junior Sydney Molina followed with a gold in the discus and a third-place finish in the hammer. On the men’s side, Stefan Matula led the way breaking the school record in the men’s javelin leading him to a gold medal and the first ever Men’s Field Athlete of the Year award.

Johnson's second year was just as successful as the first as two school and two Peach Belt Conference records were broken, while he sent one of his student-athletes to nationals following an individual PBC championship. In addition, Johnson helped place five athletes on all-region teams.

During his first season with the track team, Johnson saw big improvement in the throwers. Three records were broken and the Sharks received their first PBC champion in the throws. Johnson also had four athletes recognized as all-region performers.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., Johnson earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Miami. Johnson competed with the Miami track and field team, where he held a school record in the hammer throw for six years and is still in the top 10 all-time best list for both discus and hammer.

Before joining the Sharks, Johnson coached multiple athletes who qualified for the FHSAA state championships every year during his tenure at Miami Coral Park Senior High School.

Johnson is currently pursuing a master’s degree in education with a specialization in athletic administration.
