The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (8-6-3) fell by a 2-1 final to the Florida Southern Moccasins (6-8-3) on Friday afternoon, in the quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. The game was played at Cahall-Sandspur Field at Barker Family Stadium on the Campus of Rollins College.
Florida Southern opened the scoring at the 14:44 mark of the first half, as forward Garrett Gaa lofted a shot from 30 yards out that snuck into the upper right-hand corner of the goal.
The Sharks countered just 11 seconds later as midfielder Jeremy Bulen (Sr., Highland Village, Texas) collected a pass from Jonathan Mammarelli (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and drilled a left-footed strike from the top of the penalty box into the back of the net. The equalizer established an NCAA Division II record for the quickest goals that two teams had scored consecutively in a game.
Florida Southern broke the tie in the 38th minute as Oland Sandquist sent a ball down the left side that Patrick Dandanell slotted into the lower right corner. The Moccasins made the lead stand as neither side would score over the remaining 52 minutes of play.
Florida Southern out-shot NSU 17-16, while the Sharks held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. FSC now advances to play Barry University in Saturday's semi final round.
The contest marked a close to the stellar collegiate playing careers of seven NSU seniors, as goalkeeper Steven Deering (Highland Village, Texas), forward Lorcan Cronin (Dublin, Ireland), midfielder Eldon Yhip (Port of Spain, Trinidad), defender Joseph Clancy (Dublin, Ireland), defender Eric Naples (Houston, Texas), forward Greg Kagan (Newington, Conn.) and midfielder Jeremy Bulen laced up the boots for the final time.
