The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (0-1-0) fell by a 2-0 final on Sunday evening in their 2006 season-opener to the host Embry-Riddle University Eagles (1-0-0).
After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, Embry-Riddle midfielder Joe Joffe scored an unassisted goal for what proved to be the game-winner for the Eagles. Second half substitute Ian Thompson added an insurance goal in the 86th minute off a cross from Peter Masters to close out the scoring.
NSU's best chance came in the 50th minute, when a free kick from 20-yards away by defender Michael Kammermeyer (Fr., Nuremberg, Germany) glanced off the crossbar and the score remained knotted at 0-0.
NSU was out-shot 13-4 by the Eagles. Sharks 'keeper Jarod Rennick (Jr., Allen, Texas) made three saves, while Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Viktor Bergstrand was tested once in the match.
The Sharks return to Fort Lauderdale for their home-opener on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. versus Saint Thomas University. On Friday, The NSU women's soccer team (2-0-0) will kick off a doubleheader against Thomas University at 5:00 pm, followed by the NSU men's team versus the Thomas (GA)University men.
