NSU Volleyball Falls Short Versus Flagler College

Loss Snaps Five Game Win Streak

West Palm Beach, Fla. (September 8, 2006) - After jumping out to an early one game advantage, the Sharks of NSU had victory slip just out of its grasp versus the Flagler College Saints in five games by the scores of 30-25, 23-30, 16-30, 30-17 and 10-15. The loss marks the program's first in six games, and is also the sixth time in nine games that a match has extended into five games. NSU now stands at 5-4 on the season.

The Sharks came out hot in game one, hitting .361 as a team en route to the 30-25 win. The team showed great balance as senior setter Megan Johansen (Arlington, Neb.), sophomore outside hitter Christina Chubb (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), freshman hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) and sophomore middle Melinda Gorman (Sarasota, Fla.) all pitched in with three kills apiece.

Games two and three were controlled by Flagler College as they held the Sharks to an .056 and .088 hitting percentages respectively.

NSU rebounded to win game four in dominant fashion by a 13 point margin. Chubb smashed five more kills in the game to lead the Shark attack.

The Sharks were up 7-3 in game five before Flagler responded with a 12-3 run to win the match. The Saints hit a solid .429 in the final game, with nine kills to only one error in 19 attempts.

For the match the Sharks were led by with 14 kills and a .294 attack percentage. Gorman followed with 12 kills and a .370 attack percentage. Sophomore middle Emily Carle (Missouri City, Tex.) had nine kills and six blocks for NSU.

The Sharks look to rebound tomorrow, September 9, 2006 in a doubleheader in West Palm Beach, Fla. vs. Palm Beach Atlantic at 10 a.m. and Lees-McCrae at 3 p.m. NSU will return home on Tuesday, September 12th vs. #16 nationally ranked Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m.
