NSU Volleyball Downs West Georgia 3-2

Sharks Defeat #10 Ranked Team In South Central Region

St. Petersburg, Fla. (October 12, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team, ranked #5 in NCAA Division II's South Region, defeated West Georgia three games to two by the scores of 30-26, 27-30, 30-27, 26-30 and 15-10. The win improves the Sharks' record to 18-6 on the season while West Florida falls to 19-7.

NSU came out strong in game one, defeating the West Georgia Wolves 30-26. The Sharks out-hit UWG .278 to .257 with a balanced attack, with outside hitter Christina Chubb (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), middle Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) and opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) recording four kills apiece. NSU had six aces in the opening stanza and limited West Georgia to only one.

West Georgia rebounded to take game two, 30-27. The Wolves hit .135 while limiting NSU to .114. The Sharks were also out-blocked five to four. Tallman, Chubb, and middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) led the Sharks with four kills in the second game.

Nova Southeastern came back to win game three, 30-27. The Sharks were held to a .185 attack percentage but stepped it up defensively, with West Georgia hitting only .125. Gorman led the charge, posting seven kills for the Sharks. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (So., Miami, Fla.) tallied six digs in the game for NSU.

West Georgia knotted the match by winning game four, 30-26. At one time in the game the Sharks held a ten point advantage before the Wolves caught fire, hitting .429. NSU hit .205, led by Tallman with five kills and setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) with 14 assists, two kills and one block.

NSU held an 8-5 advantage in game five before West Georgia went on a 5-0 run to lead 10-8. A strategic timeout by Sharks' head coach Steve Wilcosky regrouped NSU, as they then went on a 7-0 run to win the deciding game 15-10. West Georgia hit -.125 in game five while Nova Southeastern hit .231. NSU out-blocked UWG five to one and had four more aces than the Wolves.

For the match, NSU was out-hit .196 to .194 but out-blocked the UWG 16.5 to 14. Nova Southeastern was led by Tallman, who had a career high 17 kills and Petrova, who tied a career high with 61 assists. Following Tallman was Gorman with 15 kills, Chubb with 14 and Carle with 13. Petrova also recorded two kills, four aces, ten digs and five blocks for NSU. Libero Kathleen Yony (Fr., Miami, Fla.) had a match high 19 digs for the Sharks.

NSU continues play on the road, taking on the Saint Leo Lions in a Sunshine State Conference match-up at 7pm on Friday, October 12th.
