NSU Volleyball Sweeps Season Series With Barry As Sharks Down Buccaneers 3-1

Sharks Reach 20 Wins For First Time Since 2000

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (October 17, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team won their 20th match of the season, downing Barry University 3-1 on Wednesday evening. The win marks the first time NSU has sweep the season series over Barry and brings NSU's overall record to 20-7, including 7-3 in Sunshine State Conference play. Barry falls to 9-15, 2-7 in SSC play.

Barry took game one, 30-27. The Buccaneers took advantage of 10 Sharks hitting errors to limit NSU to a .019 attack percentage. Barry hit .052 in the game. Opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) led NSU with four kills while Barry's Camila Pagnan led all players with eight kills.

NSU rebounded to take game two, 30-24. The Sharks hit .268 in the game while limiting Barry to .073. A trio of NSU players tied for the team lead in kills, with Tallman, middle Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) and outside hitter Andrea Irarrazabal (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) recording three each. Pagnan tallied seven for Barry.

Nova Southeastern won a back and forth game three, 31-29. The game saw 16 ties and seven lead changes before NSU put Barry away. The Sharks hit a match high .350 while Barry hit .162. Outside hitter Christina Chubb (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Gorman paced the Sharks with five kills each. Pagnan and Samara Ferreira had three apiece for the Buccaneers.

The Sharks controlled game four from the beginning to win 30-24. NSU hit .209 in the final game while Barry hit .068. Tallman and Gorman had four kills for NSU while Pagnan had seven for Barry.

For the match, NSU out-hit Barry .198 to .073. The Sharks had 12 more kills, 13 more assists, nine more digs and seven and half more blocks in the match. NSU scored 81.5 points and limited Barry to 65.

Tallman led all NSU players with 15 kills, followed by Gorman with 13 and Irarrazabal with 10. Setter Valia Petrova distributed 51 assists, had six kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Tallman also led the Sharks with 18 digs, followed by libero Kathleen Yony (Fr., Miami, Fla.) with 16, defensive specialist Alison Kalish (So., Miami, Fla.) with 15 and Petrova with 14. Gorman led all players with eight blocks while fellow middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) had six.

Barry was led by Pagnan with 25 kills and setter Maria Romanowski with 46 assists.

NSU hits the road to play Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. on Friday, October 19th at 7pm.
